Group classifications of University personnel

Responsible administrator:
Assoc. VP for Human Resources

Responsible department:
Human Resources (
hrpol@uga.edu)

POLICY:

For the purpose of personnel administration, all employees of the University are considered to be grouped in three broad classifications: faculty and administrative officers, administrative classified personnel, and non-administrative classified personnel.

Faculty and Administrative Officers - This group consists of the corps of instruction and the administrative officers of the University.

The corps of instruction has been defined in the Policies of the Board of Regents to include full-time professors, associate professors, assistant professors, instructors, special lecturers, and teaching personnel with such other titles as have been approved by the Board. Full-time research and extension personnel and duly certified librarians are included in the corps of instruction on the basis of comparable training.

Administrative officers are defined to include:

  • President
  • Vice Presidents
  • Deans
  • Directors, administrative and academic
  • Department Heads
  • Other positions specifically designated by the President

Administrative Classified Personnel - This group consists of those individuals occupying positions described in the University's Manual of Classification Specifications for Administrative Classified Personnel.

Non-administrative Classified Personnel - This group consists of those individuals occupying positions described in the University's Manual of Classifications for Non-Administrative Personnel.

Position classification

To provide a basis for a compensation plan to assist in administering wages and salaries for positions other than faculty and administrative officers in the University, a position classification plan has been developed and adopted.

The classification of positions is the grouping together of those positions which consist of similar duties, have approximately the same levels of complexity and responsibility, require similar training and experience at the time of recruitment, and may be compensated by the same general levels of pay.

Classification specifications - Details of the classification specifications utilized by the University are available upon request to the Office of Human Resources.

PROCEDURE:

Classification of a job - Whenever a new job is created or the duties and requirements of an existing job change sufficiently, the department head should initiate a request for classification action citing the basis for the request by completing and submitting the Request for Classification Action form.

This form should be completed and submitted to Human Resources prior to filling all new non-administrative and administrative classified positions. Also, when a significant change in duties and responsibilities occurs in an established position, this form should be submitted requesting reclassification. An original of this form should be sent to Human Resources and a copy retained in the department. After a classification determination has been made by Human Resources, notice will be sent to the originating department showing the results of that action.
